Eero Heinäluoma, speaking on behalf of the S&D Group, expresses deep concern over a series of money laundering scandals involving Danske Bank, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, and the recent Cyprus Confidential files. He emphasizes that the list of such scandals within the EU appears to be endless, with criminals, oligarchs, and the super-rich exploiting the financial system for money laundering, posing a security threat, particularly with Russian money.
He asserts that the issue extends beyond Cyprus and calls for a comprehensive solution for the entire financial system. The S&D Group is leading the effort to advocate for an ambitious and effective Anti-Money Laundering (AML) package. Heinäluoma insists that this package should close regulatory loopholes, irrespective of resistance faced. He expresses confidence in the Spanish presidency and urges collaboration to create a better environment for honest entrepreneurs and citizens.
The proposed AML package aims to establish stringent rules concerning beneficial ownership to unveil the true criminals behind opaque corporate structures. Heinäluoma advocates for strict and effective regulations on targeted financial sanctions against oligarchs. Additionally, he calls for closing loopholes in the crypto sector to prevent its misuse in financing terrorism. The implementation of rigorous AML rules, according to Heinäluoma, will enhance fairness and safety in Europe, meeting the expectations of voters.
